Mission Statement

Big Sky Acoustics Ltd recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. A commitment has been made to reduce the environmental impact of the work we do and this is an integral part of the business strategy and operating methods. Customers, suppliers and other stakeholders are encouraged to do the same.

 

Policy Aims

At Big Sky Acoustics Ltd we will endeavour to:
Comply with, and aim to exceed, all relevant regulatory requirements.
Continually improve and monitor environmental performance.
Continually improve and reduce environmental impacts.

Paper
The use of paper in the office is kept to a minimum.
Documents are sent electronically whenever possible.
Invoices and statements are emailed to clients.
Electronic payments are made to our suppliers and we encourage clients to settle their accounts using electronic payment methods.
We will reduce packaging as much as possible.
We will seek to buy recycled and recyclable paper products.
We will reuse and recycle all paper where possible.

 

Energy and Water
We will seek to reduce the amount of energy used as much as possible.
Lights and electrical equipment will be switched off when not in use.
Energy efficient lighting is used throughout our buildings.
Heating will be adjusted with energy consumption in mind.
The energy consumption and efficiency of new products will be taken into account when purchasing.
Rechargeable batteries are used on all our equipment.
Used batteries are disposed of in appropriate recycling facilities.
Electrical equipment is serviced and maintained for maximum lifespan and then disposed of correctly at the end of its life.

 

Office Supplies
We will evaluate if the need can be met in another way.
We will evaluate if renting/sharing is an option before purchasing equipment.
We will evaluate the environmental impact of any new products we intend to purchase.
We will favour more environmentally friendly and efficient products wherever possible.
We will reuse and recycle everything we are able to.

 

Transportation
We will reduce the need to travel, restricting to necessity trips only.
We will promote the use of travel alternatives such as e-mail or video/phone conferencing.
We will make additional efforts to use public transport.
We will favour ‘green’ vehicles and maintain them rigorously to ensure ongoing efficiency.

 

Maintenance and Cleaning
Cleaning materials used will be as environmentally friendly as possible.
Materials used in office refurbishment will be as environmentally friendly as possible.
We will only use licensed and appropriate organisations to dispose of waste.

 

Monitoring and Improvement
We will comply with and exceed all relevant regulatory requirements.
We will continually improve and monitor environmental performance.
We will continually improve and reduce environmental impacts.
We will incorporate environmental factors into business decisions.
We will increase awareness through training.
We will review this policy and any related business issues regularly.

 

Big Sky Bees
After years of providing advice on designing and operating outside spaces at licensed premises for our clients Richard Vivian decided to take a more hands on approach. Where gardens, roof terraces and balconies are being developed at clients’ premises design schemes that are nature-friendly are actively encouraged. Locating bee hives on commercial roof-spaces in urban locations requires specialist skills but including bee-friendly planting in any scheme is easily achievable. Therefore advice is freely given regarding the planting of forage for pollinators and diversity is encouraged in planting schemes.

Meanwhile, at the office, we do have our own bee hives. Bees are pollinators vital to our food chain. One third of the food we eat would not be available but for bees. Pollination by bees is important for genetic sustainability. In the UK about 70 crops are dependent on, or benefit from, visits from bees. In addition, bees pollinate the flowers of many plants which become part of feed for farm animals. The economic value of honey bees and bumblebees as pollinators of commercially grown insect-pollinated crops in the UK has been estimated at over £200 million per year. The harvest from honey bees of honey, pollen, wax and propolis has nutritional, craft, manufacturing, and medical applications. In the summer months the number of “workers” at Big Sky Acoustics can exceed 150,000!

 

Culture
We will involve stakeholders in the implementation of this policy, for greater commitment and improved performance.
We will update this policy at least once annually in consultation with stakeholders where necessary.
We will arrange relevant environmental training.
We will work with suppliers, contractors and sub-contractors to improve their environmental performance.
We will use local labour and materials where available to reduce CO2 and help the community.
